Barbudan Fishermen Launch Legal Campaign for Codrington Lagoon,
An Important Source of Water and Food

Two Barbudan residents are taking legal action against their government’s approval of permits for foreign investors to construct villas on 114 acres of protected wetlands in Codrington Lagoon National Park. The lawsuit, filed by local fisherman and tour guide George Jeffery and the U.K.-based nonprofit Global Legal Action Network, challenges the construction of luxury homes that threaten the sanctuary for frigate birds, endangered species, and a crucial turtle nesting ground. The lawsuit aims to overturn the construction permit granted despite rejection by the national environmental department. The project also infringes on locals’ access to the lagoon, a vital source of water and food.
