The Caño Martín Peña Land Trust serves as a vital instrument for the residents of seven communities bordering the Channel Martín Peña, enabling them to combat the relentless urban expansion of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the looming threats of flooding, displacement, and gentrification. This innovative tool facilitates participatory, effective, and informed planning processes for nearly two hundred acres of land situated in Puerto Rico’s capital. By empowering community leadership and fostering collaborative development initiatives, the Land Trust plays a crucial role in preserving the environmental integrity of the ecosystem. This proactive approach not only mitigates the risk of flooding but also safeguards against the displacement of residents who have called these territories home for over eighty years. As urbanization encroaches upon these communities, the Land Trust becomes a bastion of protection, preventing their displacement and preserving their cultural heritage amidst rapid population growth.
